Thinking about what they said I had the epiphany which was stirred more by a comment my friend made after going to a trend show this year. She said that the people there claim that trends used to be made and started by the big shots and filter down to us. We would follow. But now we make the trends. My epiphany then was that that person commenting on what is in or not is wrong. Not just because they would make the wearer insecure but because they don't determine the trends or fashion.
Fashion used to make the trends and we used to wear them. Now we wear the fashion and create the trends. If you can own something, then do it.
I will use the "indie" scene as an example. Go back 4 years ago... If I stepped out the house in my mom's old over-sized denim shirt, tights, brown leather ankle boots with laces with scrunchy socks and a cardi, you would have laughed.
Today... I'd be a picture on your blog post, the "must-haves" for winter in the Glamour magazine, I would be in. Well, who made that fashion statement? The young people of this world who could not afford the expensive clothes and so decided to wear what they could and what they felt comfortable in. They rock. Today, "indie" is the in thing and you look good if you can still look stylish.
The same goes for "goth". Black and tight works and is on most runways after angry teens made the trend a do.
Coloured skinnies... well back in the day I would have been said that my jeans looked like my dad's straight leg jeans and they were not blue. Today, all hail the coloured skinnies.
Brogues... I would have been laughed at for looking like a school girl. For wearing grandma's curtains on my shoes. Today, well everyone has a pair of brogues.
Wearing my skirt on my waist... well let's say I conformed so much to not doing it that my mom is still shocked when I do even though it has been a trend for a few years now.
I don't say we mustn't give credit where credit is due. I mean all the fashion designers of this world have made a way for themselves by letting in the trends the world gives them to work with and they can make things for those whose parents don't have them already available.
But when going shopping for a "must-have" item these days my first stop is my mom's cupboard or vintage shops. They made the trends. And we have re-invented them.
So then you would say it has to do with attitude. The way the wearer wears it. Most of those new trend-setters next door to me have a "we-don't-care-what-you-think-we-rock" attitude. Guess what? They do! I love the new way of trends and fashion. Anything can work. Just work it!
I love this look! Wow to the tights and boots combo! |
You can't say her look is outdated... The more outdated, the better. |
